Monarca, meaning monarch in Spanish, began with the butterflies. I loved the idea of bringing together butterflies from different periods and materials and making them the focus of the piece.
A vintage pot metal rhinestone butterfly is layered with two sterling silver brooches, and an enamel flower brooch. I especially love the contrast between the sparkle of the rhinestones, the darker silver filigree, and the soft ivory and gold tones of the flower.
As I worked, I kept arranging the butterflies at different angles, so they didn’t feel static. I wanted each one to stand out on its own without competing with the others.
